Medals/Medallions
Souvenir bronze medallion of Alcatraz. Medallion is 1-1/2 inches in diameter and comes in a plastic case.
Isla de Alcatraces (Spanish for Pelican Island) was named in 1775 by Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala, Spanish commander of the survey vessel San Carlos, the first ship to enter San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz was granted by Governor Manuel Micheltorena in 1843 to Jose Yves Limantour, and later claimed by Julian Workman and John Fremont. In 1849 Fort Alcatraz was established and occupied by troops. Held by the Army until January 1, 1934 when it became a Federal prison. The prison closed July 1, 1963 and is now a very popular tourist spot.
