Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was the first to navigate a vessel, the Gjoa, through the Northwest Passage between 1903 and 1906. In 1911, Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole. The Gjoa was a gift to San Francisco from the Norwegian community, and was returned to Norway May 4, 1972.
